It is far from being a complete list of descendants. For example: There were ten children born to each of the first two generations of which we have been able to trace only one from each generation, that of our direct ancestors. Also there have been other researchers who have declined offers to share information, as well as many individuals who did not respond to my requests for family information. Dorrough, Jr. 1208 Minglewood Lane Friendswood, Texas 77546-4907 vii Introduction The Modified Register System type format used in the preparation of this material makes it easy to trace ancestors from generation to generation for the 10,298 plus individuals listed in the book. Of this figure, over 6534 are Dorough descedants less an estimated 100 or more adopted children. The remaining individuals are spouses and the parents of spouses. There are 3677+ marriages listed. Under the Modified Register System, each descendant is given an Identification Number (ID) by generation with the starting person as number one, his first child as No. 2, etc. All children that have married and have families are listed in Generation No. 2; their married children with families will appear in Generation No. 3, and so on. The ID numbers are assigned sequentially by the computer program which also tags each name for indexing. The accompanying index is computer generated. Children within a family are also numbered in order of birth, using lower case Roman numerals. The next column indicates the sex of the child. In a few instances you will note that the sex is omitted; the reason being that the given name might be used by either male or female and we had nothing that would indicate the sex of the child. The next number is the ID number assigned the child. When a plus (+) sign appears before the ID number, it indicates that there will be additional information on this individual in the next generation. Usually, when there is a plus sign, only the name of the individual and birth and death dates, when known, are given; more personal data, if available, will appear under that individual's entry in the next generation. To trace backward to find your ancestors, take the parent's ID number and trace backward until you find that parent listed as a child in a family. Use the ID number of the parent in that family and again trace until you find him or her listed as a child. The ID number of that parent will give you then next number to trace. To trace forward to find descendants, when there is a plus sign (+) with the ldentification Number of a child locate that ID number as a parent in the next generation. If there is no plus sign with the ID number then there is no additional information for that individual. Standard genealogical abbreviations are used: b.=Born, d.=Died, and m.=Married, Cem. or Cmt. =Cemetery, bur. =buried, bef. =before, aft. =after, and abt. =about. When not spelled out, the abbreviations for the names of states are those used by the U.S. Postal Service For geographical locations, when only the county and state are named, they will appear as Upson County, Georgia. When all three are known, they will appear as City, County, State. If just the city and state are known, the commas will be placed thus: City,,State. If only the state of record is known, it will appear as ,,Georgia. The placement of commas tell you if it was a city or a county or both that has been omitted. This omission will be more common for cities since many of our ancestors were farmers and did not live in a city. Sometimes when a city is shown it could indicate the closest city or town from where they lived; occasionally it will be the name of a community that no longer exists. You may find that Cordele and the Dorough Cemetery appear under both Dooly and Crisp Counties for until the formation of Crisp County in 1905, they were a part of Dooly County. Many Dorough families living in Dooly County at that time found themselves living in Crisp County without having moved. Dooly County had been formed from Indian Lands in 1821. You might also notice that the name of a town or community may appear in more than one county of a state; the only restriction to this is that a U.S. Post Offlce cannot be established in a town when another town of the same name in the state has a Post Office. When only a town was given I have attempted to locate and record the county; sources include the National Five-Digit Zip Code and Post Office Directory; Rand McNally Travel Maps; commercially prepared state road maps when they were obtainable; The Everton Publishers Handybook for Genealogists; a Texas Atlas and Gazetteer and the Alabama Highway Department's off~cial county road maps. THE DESCENDANTS OF ABNER B. DOROUGH The remarks included with some of the family data are usually notes that I had entered for my own information. Some may appear rather cryptic although I have attempted to edit them for clarity and better readability. In many instances I had recorded my source (or source document) of information; this was entered on my basic documents and I have chosen not to delete it. With few exceptions, I have not shown occupation unless it was a service or a specialty, such as doctor (M.D. MD or Dr.), judge, sheriff, etc. I have deliberately steered away from derogatory remarks; fortunately, nothing of a criminal nature has been found as a result of these searches. There is a record of one DURROUGH imprisoned for murder in Texas and a DORROUGH in the federal prison system in Atlanta, Georgia, but we have not been able to connect them to anyone listed in this book. I have adhered to the spelling of names as they were shown in source documents except when data taken from census reports was known to be in error. In those instances I have corrected the spelling. The earlier generations were taken from old records (some of which may have been constructed from the memory of our elders), family Bibles, Census reports, etc. Some may not list all of the children in a family, and it is entirely possible that a child may not be a member of the family in which he is listed. Perhaps one of our readers will have the documentation to accurately identify their parentage. Their help has been instrumental in correcting the parentage of Willis R. Dorough, Thomas Smith Dorough and Daniel J. Dorough. The true parentage of Simeon B. Dorough remains in question. Earlier group sheets listed him as a son of Thomas Milton Dorough, but he was not on later lists. However, he was a real person, a Dorough decsendant and his descendants have been traced. For this reason, I have chosen to retain him in the family of Thomas Milton Dorough and hope that perhaps one of our readers will be able to furnish data that will verify or indicate his true parentage. You may have records that differ in some ways from what is recorded here, especially dates. This is not unusual for much of the information comes from memory, especially that from our earlier generations, and sometimes memories fade and imaginations grow with the passage of time. When receiving material from several sources, I have found discrepancies in dates and other data, including material pertaining to this last century. In such instances I have taken the consensus when there was one, otherwise I have selected what appeared to be the most logical. On occasion I may have added comments to the entry to point out the discrepancy. It is well to remember that nothing un be taken as factual until you have proven it. This text should serve to help you trace your lineage, but carry on from there to verify and to document your findings. I welcome any changes, corrections and additions that may be offered by the reader that will assist us in recording a more complete record of the descendants Abner B. Dorough, and reiterate that this research is a continuing project that will not end with the publishing of this book. Nathan Smith DOROUGH was born 1809 in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. He was the son of James DOROUGH, Jr. and Elizabeth SMITH. Nathan died Jul 1864 in Atlanta, Fulton, Georgia, at the age of 55, and was buried in Atlanta, Fulton, Gwrgia. Nathan served as a Justice of the Peace in Oglethorpe County for many years. Nathan is reported to have died during the battle for Atlanta in 1864; the National Archives does not have an index card on him as a member of the Confederate army. The book, "Crisp County History in Pictures adStories" (1978) states that he, along with his son, James Henry, enlisted in the first Regiment, Georgia Volunteers, that he died in the battle for Atlanta, and is buried in Atlanta's Oakland Cemetery. Thomas Alan Dorough was not able to locate his gravesite and a letter to him from the Sexton states that there is no record of his burial. However, there are a number of unmarked graves of Confederate soldiers in the cemetery. Oakland Cemetery was the only cemetery in Atlanta during this period. Nathan was probably too old to enlist in the Confederate Army; however, he could have enlisted in a home guard unit which may have been pressed into service by the Governor for the defense of Atlanta. The archives would not have these records. Nathan moved his family to Dooly County, now Crisp County, Georgia, in the winter of 1850, to a farm he had purchased March 12, 1849. They lived in a covered wagon until Nathan could build their first house on the property. His wife died in 1851, to be followed by their only daughter three weeks later. Nathan laid them to rest on his farm in a grassy clearing surrounded by stately pines. This was the start of what is now known as the Dorough Cemetery; it is located across from the Midway Methodist Church about three miles from Cordele. He was captured at Burksville, Nottoway County, Virginia, on 6 April 1965, and died as a prisoner of war at Point Lookout, Maryland, on 30 May 1865. Cause of death is attributed to Chronic Diarrhea.
